5 out of 5 stars Works on ATT   September 4, 2010
John Czyz (Fayetteville, GA USA)
First impression out of the box is that it is really small, about 10 credit cards stack together.

Supposed to charge it for 4 hours, but hey was too excited so just inserted the SIM, battery, and powercord. Whats really neat is that it comes with a variety of 110 and 220 volt adapters, that are also very slim and well engineered.

Turned on by pressing the one button on the unit and powered up the laptop. Followed instructions in the book on how to connect wifi to the Mifi to configure the settings. One thing that is not mentioned is the authentication protocol HAP and CHAP or none. I could not connect to my ATT network with None set at authentication. But HAP and CHAP worked. Did a bit of researched and found that HAP stood for Handshake protocol and CHAP for Challenge Handshake Protocol. The CHAP is supposed to be better because it re-authenticates every once in a while. Worked out good too with CHAP because my upload speed was 500kbps on CHAP but only 110kpbs on HAP. Download speed was consistently between 1,240 to 1450kbps.

I used the SIM from my iPhone 3GS, but be careful about going over the limit, the new data plans that ATT sells is capped at 2GB, and anything over that is currently 10 bucks for every GB over the 2GB per month. Luckily you can log into your ATT account and see your usage, as well as look at the usage log on the mifi. With those download/upload speeds, you can go crazy and exceed your 2GB all in one day, and get a hefty bill.

I plan on using this mifi to provide the portable wifi hotspot, too bad the service providers offer wifi hotspot on all their devices for say a nominal costs. That would have been much more convenient for me, and profitable for them. Verizon is a bad example. The new Android 2.2 supports wifi hotspot, and yet Verizon has disabled this feature saying that their older droid phones dont work with it. Hah hah, yea right. I bet they do work, it is just that Verizon wants you to buy their new Droid X or Droid 2 phones and then pay another 20 bucks for that wifi hotspot feature (when it is already built in for free). Might be an opportunity for some unemployed lawyer for a class action.

For now, I am really happy with my purchase. As long is last two years until my ATT contract expires, I'll be happy. Will have to see how it stands up to long term use. Battery is supposed to be between 3 to 4 hours, but havent tested it. Oh the range is supposed to be only 30 feet, but I got connection and good transfer at 50 feet. I put the mifi in one corner and walked to the other side of my 3200sf house. But the transfer rate suffers a bit with increased distance.

4 out of 5 stars Great product despite a slightly difficult set up   August 11, 2010

It took a little while to get it set up because the directions do not detail where you enter in all the settings and some of the settings they do not detail at all. However, once working, this is an amazing product. Great for travel and way faster than I had expected. Since it is unlocked, you can you use it with many different carriers, this is helpful when traveling abroad. It is small, lightweight, and portable. This is one of my favorite gadgets of the year.

5 out of 5 stars This review is both for at&t and the 2372   July 28, 2010

I have a Verizon mifi 2200 that I've used for a year and it has saved me many times when traveling. But it's SLOW. With the 2372 and AT&T I get at a minimum 3 times the download speeds that Verizon provided. Sometimes 5 times the download speeds. I'm canceling my Verizon account and sticking with AT&T. We just got back from Yosemite National Park and they had AT&T in the lodges on my IPad 3g but the verizon mifi 2200 couldn't get a signal. AT&T has been everywhere that I need a signal. So with the 2372 my Laptop and ipad wifi are covered.

5 out of 5 stars Works great with AT&T!   July 27, 2010

I have been using an AT&T USB Mercury Connect in combination with a CradlePoint CTR500 for about a year and a half now. This combination worked, but it wasn't really portable (not portable enough to use from my pocket anyway).

I purchased the MiFi 2372 a week ago and am very pleased (even surprised) with its performance. It connects to AT&T much faster than my old setup, and is able to pickup a usable signal in areas that the USB Mercury could not.
I am using a generic usb cigarette lighter charger with a micro-usb cable for use/charging in the car. I can pull the cord, throw the MiFi in my pocket or briefcase, and not miss a beat.

Note that I did have to set the APN name to isp.cingular before it would connect to AT&T, but this was the only modification I had to make.

One slight ding is that when you connect it to a computer, it goes into 'modem' mode and shuts down the wifi radio. I would have liked to have the option for it to charge from the usb connection, and continue to function like it does on a charger. It would also be nice if there were a display on the unit with signal strength and battery level, but it is easy enough to see that from the web status page.
I have not used it on battery power for more than an hour, so I can't speak for battery run-time.

If you are on AT&T, and paying for the 5gig data plan, this is a very solid choice. I routinely use the connection with my laptop, iPad, and an Ipod Touch.

5 out of 5 stars Using your Novatel MiFi Router   July 23, 2010

First, it is indeed true that the Novatel 2372 GSM MiFi device will work on either the AT&T or T-Mobile GSM networks. What may not be obvious to everyone is the fact that T-Mobile's GSM network will only accommodate a 3G connection if the cellular device is capable of supporting transmission in the 1700/2100 MHz band. Since the Novatel 2372 MiFi device does not support transmission in this band combination, this results in the T-Mobile network only allowing a noticeably slower EDGE data connection. The AT&T network, however, supports a 3G connection in the 2100 MHz band (uplink and downlink).

I found this out the hard way since I had a T-Mobile service plan in effect when I purchased my Novatel 2372 MiFi router. I noticed very quickly that my data connections were always EDGE connections instead of 3G connections. Once I determined the reason for not being able to access a higher speed 3G connection on T-Mobile's network, I switched my service to AT&T's network. This raised another issue which is finding out the complexities involved in obtaining an AT&T data-only service plan, i.e., a service plan that does not entail a 2 year commitment.

Below are the details associated with obtaining reliable MiFi data service for a Novatel 2372 MiFi router.

* AT&T at one time offered, but no longer offers, a data-only service plan. In other words today a normal cell phone plan available from AT&T must include a voice service plan. However, they do offer a DataConnect plan which is designed to accommodate a USB Wireless modem device (Air Card), e.g., for use in a laptop computer only. Unless you specifically mention that you have such a GSM capable device and wish to obtain data service and no voice capabilities, the AT&T sales people will tell you no such data-only plan exists unless you can prove you are legally deaf.
* I was able to sign up for AT&T's DataConnect plan for about $66/month with a 5 GB usage limit. In my case I will most likely not exceed this limit, hence this plan is ideal for use with my MiFi router.
* Once you have purchased the appropriate AT&T service and received an AT&T SIM card, you must have knowledge of certain configuration details in order to render your MiFi router functional on the service providers network. Don't count on AT&T to have this information available. Even the AT&T higher level technical support people may not necessarily be familiar with what a MiFi router is and therefore unfamiliar with how to properly configure such a device on AT&T's network.

Here are the simple details required to configure your Novatel 2372 MiFi router for access to either AT&T or T-Mobile data services:

In the Novatel configuration setup for creating an Internet Profile, I discovered that your default profile must include the correct APN string and a valid Username and Password. Fortunately this kind of information is available on the Internet or obtainable from your cellular service provider.

For AT&T (HSPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS), the APN should be: WAP.CINGULAR
- Username can be your assigned mobile telephone number
- Password can be your assigned mobile telephone number

For T-Mobile (EDGE and GPRS), the APN should be: [...]
- Username can be blank
- Password can be blank

There appears to be some variations in acceptable entries, especially involving the Username and Password. In general, however, the APN entry must be recognized by the carrier matching the inserted SIM card.
